It’s been four months since the events in the end of the previous season, when Beverly had sex with Matt. When Sean discovered this his heart was broken, as well as Matt’s face. Of course this betrayal had influenced Beverly, Sean and their marriage. While Sean’s communication with Matt became more tensed and cold, his marriage with Beverly was actually broken. They now live separately, but still work together on their show. When the pilot episode is released the critics from the popular media is awful, and it really upsets Sean. Matt makes his first awkward attempts to restore the friendship with Sean, but fails.
